Check your primary care benefit before you pay anything
This is the one piece of advice worth taking from this page.
Employers who build direct contracted plans are usually doing it because they want employees using primary care. Preventive visits and chronic disease management are dramatically cheaper than the emergency rooms and hospital admissions that follow when nobody manages anything.
So these plans frequently reduce or waive cost sharing for primary care specifically. Sometimes a visit here costs you nothing, when the same visit under a standard PPO would carry a copay.
Many members never find out, pay a copay nobody asked them for, and treat the plan as ordinary insurance. Read your summary plan description, or call member services and ask directly what your primary care cost share is.
What direct contracting is not
It is not direct primary care. That is a separate model where a patient pays a monthly membership fee to a practice, outside insurance entirely. The names are close and the arrangements have nothing in common.
Here, your employer is the one contracting. You are covered through work as usual.
Why this suits ongoing care
If your plan makes primary care cheap, the highest value use is not the occasional sick visit. It is the ongoing work: blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid, weight, sleep.
That is exactly the care that gets skipped when every visit carries a copay, and it is the care where skipping costs the most later. See chronic condition management.

Partners Direct Health questions we get asked
Why would my employer contract directly instead of buying insurance?
To control cost and design. Direct contracting lets an employer negotiate rates itself and build benefits around what it wants people using, which is very often primary care, because it is the cheapest place to catch an expensive problem early.
Does that mean my primary care visits are cheaper?
Frequently yes, and sometimes free. Employers building these plans often reduce or waive cost sharing for primary care specifically. Check your plan summary, because people routinely pay copays they did not owe.
Is this the same as a direct primary care membership?
No. Direct primary care is a monthly membership you pay yourself, outside insurance. This is your employer contracting with providers on your behalf. The names are similar and the arrangements are not.
How do I confirm coverage before my visit?
Call with your member ID and plan name and we verify on the phone.
