Plan networks change every year. Give us the full plan name and the member ID from your card and we will check it against the products we are contracted for.
First Health is one of the most widely used and least recognized networks in the country. If you are reading this because you saw the name somewhere on your card and were not sure what it meant, that is the normal experience.
We are in network with it, and we see First Health members age 16 and older at our Southlake office.
Why nobody recognizes the name
First Health is a national PPO network that plans rent rather than a carrier that sells you insurance. Your employer, your retiree plan or your supplemental product buys access to the network, then uses somebody else to administer claims.
The practical consequence is that the name on the front of the card is usually not First Health. It is your administrator. First Health appears in small print, on the back, or only in your plan documents.
People routinely conclude they have no network at all and pay cash somewhere. That is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
Where it turns up most
Three situations account for most of the First Health members we see.
Retiree coverage. Plans that continue after employment frequently use a rented national network rather than building one.
Supplemental and limited benefit products. These often carry network access that members do not realize they have.
Smaller employers buying through a third party administrator, where a national network is cheaper than negotiating regional contracts.

That last part matters. A practice that will not tell you no before the visit will not tell you much after it either.

First Health questions we get asked
My card has a big carrier logo and First Health in small print. Which one counts?
The small print. First Health is the network that decides which providers you can see at contracted rates. The larger logo is often the administrator processing your claims, which is a different job.
I have a retiree plan. Does First Health apply to me?
Often yes. First Health shows up frequently in retiree coverage and supplemental products, which is one of the reasons members are surprised to find they have network access they did not know about.
Do I need a referral?
Not for primary care under a First Health arrangement. If your specific plan adds a requirement, your plan documents or the member services number on your card will say so.
Can you check before I make an appointment?
Yes, and we would rather. Call with the member ID and any network names on the card and we run it while you are on the phone.
