BCBS of Texas plans we are in network with

  • PPO and POS
  • Premier HMO
  • Essentials HMO
  • High Performance Network
  • MyBlue Health HMO
  • Medicare HMO
  • Medicare PPO
  • Blue Advantage HMO, Marketplace

Plan networks change every year. Give us the full plan name and the member ID from your card and we will check it against the products we are contracted for.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas is the most common insurance we see, and it is also the carrier where the difference between plans matters most. We are in network across a broad range of BCBS of Texas products, listed above.

The thing to check on your card

BCBS of Texas runs several distinct networks. The names look similar and the cards look similar, and they are not interchangeable.

  • PPO and POS plans give you the broadest access and no referral requirement
  • Blue Advantage HMO, including the Marketplace version, requires a designated primary care provider
  • Blue Essentials and Blue Premier are HMO products with their own networks
  • High Performance Network is narrower, chosen by some employers to reduce premiums
  • MyBlue Health is a limited network product
  • Medicare HMO and PPO are separate again from the commercial lines

We hold contracts across these, which is why the list above is as long as it is. Still, verify. The single most common insurance problem we see is a patient who checked the carrier and not the network.

If you have an HMO plan, do this first

HMO members need Magnolia Primary Care on file as the primary care provider before the visit. This is not paperwork we can do for you, because it lives on the insurer’s side.

Log in to Blue Access for Members, or call the number on the back of your card, and designate Magnolia Primary Care at our Southlake address. Call us first and we will give you the exact provider name to enter, because some HMO products tie the designation to one specific provider rather than the practice. It usually takes effect quickly, sometimes immediately.

Skipping this step is the most frequent cause of a denied claim for an otherwise perfectly covered visit. If you are not sure whether it went through, call us before your appointment and we will check the eligibility response.

Costs

Preventive care, including your annual physical and routine screenings, is covered in full under most BCBS of Texas plans. Problem-focused visits apply to your copay or deductible.

If both happen in one visit, both are billed. That rule surprises people every year, and we would rather explain it in the room. See why your annual physical came with a bill.

For your specific deductible and copay, call the member services number on your card. We can verify network status and eligibility, but only BCBS can confirm what you owe.

Medicare members

If you have BCBS Medicare HMO or PPO, ask about the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit. It is a distinct service from an annual physical, generally covered with no cost sharing, and it is one of the more underused benefits in Medicare.

BCBS of Texas questions we get asked

Do Blue Advantage HMO members need to name a PCP first?

Yes. Blue Advantage HMO and the other BCBS HMO products require a primary care provider on file, and claims can be denied if the designation is missing or still points at a previous provider. You make the change through BCBS, either in Blue Access for Members or by calling the number on your card.

Does a BCBS PPO plan need a referral?

No. PPO and POS members can book with us directly.

My card says HPN. What is that?

High Performance Network, a narrower network some Texas employers select to lower premiums. Not every provider in the standard PPO is in HPN, which is exactly why we verify the network on your card rather than the carrier name.

Is a Marketplace Blue Advantage plan the same as an employer plan?

No. Marketplace plans bought through healthcare.gov are separate products with their own networks, even though the carrier and often the plan name look familiar. Give us the full plan name and we will confirm.
