Men's Preventive Care in Southlake, TX

Physicals, heart and metabolic risk, cancer screening and diabetes screening, in one visit rather than three.

We see patients age 16 and older.

Two people jogging outdoors

Men put this off, and the reasons are predictable: nothing hurts, appointments are inconvenient, and nobody wants to make a fuss. This page covers the preventive side of primary care for men, billed through your insurance like any other medical visit.

Start with a baseline

If you have not been seen in years, start here. A full annual physical gets you blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney and liver function, a CBC, and a proper look at whatever has been nagging.

Most men who come in after a long gap have at least one number that needs attention. Almost none of them had symptoms, which is exactly the point.

Heart and metabolic risk

Cardiovascular disease is still the thing most likely to kill you, and it builds silently from your thirties onward.

We calculate your 10-year risk from your actual numbers rather than a general impression, and we treat blood pressure and cholesterol early rather than waiting for an event to make the decision for you. Lipoprotein(a) is worth checking once in your life, particularly with a family history of early heart attacks, because it is genetic, common and invisible on a standard panel.

Where the risk estimate lands in the borderline zone, a coronary calcium score often settles it. More on our heart disease prevention page.

Prostate screening

PSA screening is a decision, not a default.

We go through what an elevated PSA does and does not mean, what a biopsy involves, and the fact that many prostate cancers found by screening would never have caused harm. Then you decide. Both choices are defensible and we do not push. More detail on our preventive screening page.

Colorectal cancer screening

The recommended starting age is now 45, not 50, and that change has not reached everyone.

Colonoscopy is not the only option. Stool-based testing is a reasonable choice for many people at average risk, with the tradeoff that a positive result means a colonoscopy anyway. We explain both and let you pick, because the best screening test is the one you will actually do.

Diabetes and blood sugar

Screening matters here because the window where the outcome is still reversible has no symptoms at all. An A1c between 5.7 and 6.4 is prediabetes, and it is the stage where modest weight loss and regular activity genuinely change what happens next.

We screen based on age, weight and risk factors rather than waiting for thirst and fatigue to show up.

Sleep, alcohol and mood

Three things men are rarely asked about, and which drive a great deal of what turns up as fatigue and weight gain.

We screen for sleep apnea, which is common, treatable, and makes blood pressure and blood sugar harder to control. We ask about alcohol in real numbers rather than “socially.” We screen for depression, which in men more often looks like irritability and withdrawal than sadness.

Carrying extra weight makes several of these worse at once, and our medical weight management program treats it as the medical problem it is.

Questions about your own case?

These pages describe how we treat this generally. What matters is your history, your labs and your medications, and that takes a visit. We are taking new patients now and most major insurance is accepted.

Questions patients ask

I have not seen a doctor in years. Where do I start?

A full physical with labs. Most men who come in after a long gap have at least one number that needs attention, and almost none of them had symptoms. That is the entire argument for going.

When should prostate screening start?

Discuss it at 50, or at 45 with a father or brother who had prostate cancer or if you are of African ancestry. It is a shared decision, not an automatic test, and we give you the real tradeoffs including overdiagnosis.

Is colorectal screening really needed at 45?

Yes. The recommended starting age moved from 50 to 45, and a lot of men in their late forties do not know that. You have options beyond colonoscopy, including stool-based tests, and we go through them rather than assuming.

Is this covered by insurance?

Preventive visits and screening are covered in full under most plans. If we also manage an active problem in the same appointment, that portion applies to your copay or deductible, and we tell you in the room before it happens.
